2010 Trends in Personal Mobile Tech
By Lance Winslow
So what are the new trends in personal tech? It seems that the iPhone is finally getting some new applications, and that Google’s new mobile device will be feature-rich. And we cannot forget how Kindel burst onto the scenes in 2008 as an e-book reader, and should expect more features soon.
The concept of a smart phone is surely taking its title seriously. The question that consumers have is which one should they buy, and it has some consumers actually waiting now for the next new great thing to hit good market.
It appears that soon we will have smart phones that will alert you to someone with a similar profile if they are in your vicinity. Since both individuals will have GPS they will know where you are. Your phone will ring and alert you that there is someone with your similar profile nearby, and ask you if you’d like to meet them; Yes or No? They too will be alerted with the same question.
At that point you can hold the phone up to yourself and it will send that image to their cell phone, and they can do the same thing simultaneously and then you can look around, find the person and you can introduce yourselves. Sounds like a nice feature; correct?
Some people might very much like that and it is a way to use technology to bring people together. Likewise, the same feature as other applications, such as alerting you to the nearest Starbucks from your current location. Imagine the commercial applications, ad revenue, and value to the consumer?
Once your Smartphone learns your habits, it will advise you of things that you are interested in, things going on around you. These are all features that will begin to hit the scenes of personal tech in 2010.

Taking a Prototype Personal Tech Product to The Next Step
By Lance Winslow
Recently an entrepreneur had considered the possibility of taking a new type of jogging light, which would not need a battery from concept to market. The product made sense because everyone who walks or jogs at night would love to have one and it has applications for security professionals, neighborhood watch groups, space and probably even military. The entrepreneur was a salesman in a large corporation. He was determined to sell the product via TV Infomercial. Of course in reviewing this I had some comments;
“. . .Sales experience is important indeed. So is your stated experience being involved in start-ups, but doing the whole thing and making it work when your own butt is on the line is something else in the current business climate in this country. Selling the idea to a military usage or that flashlight company with the “Shaking Flashlight” maybe worthy if you have something more to show them. They might even fund you and kick you down some patent rights with exclusives for a nominal percentage and assist you in your efforts or pay you outright for it? I think you should look into that with them and contact a few Universities that I mentioned too, to help you miniaturize your prototype as no jogger wants to lug around something as big and heavy as a flashlight.”
So you see having sales experience is only one component of being an entrepreneur and those who think they can get rich just doing TV infomercials, well you might wish to check the statistics on that before you go falling in love with your product. Additionally I had the following advice for this entrepreneur;
“Even at best case scenarios with your TV infomercial, it is not the safest start-up business in the world, but it is a viable one. Personally, if I had to choose, I would not do it only for the Consumer Market, if that were my only choice; I simply would not take the risk or my own time and money. It would need to be a more long-term thing with a long-term plan for all markets and new ones discovered along the way. There are so many uses for this, it could be a whole new sector of the LED Lighting Industry, you see? It could be the next new thing.”
For the short-term play with new innovations and bringing them to market one has to look inside themselves and do a little self-assessment, as you only get one good shot at it and money does not grow on trees. So please entrepreneurs be thinking here before taking your new high tech personal gadget to market and blow a whole ton of cash.
Artificial Intelligence and Smart Phone User Friendly Experience – New Wave of Personal Tech
By Lance Winslow
Indeed, a good number of people that I talk to are somewhat weary and skeptical of their smart phones, and many of the features which are created using artificial intelligence to help them. They are worried that their applications are spying on them, and many of them actually are. Sometimes they are spying on customers for the wrong reasons, but most of the time they are collecting data on the user to help increase its functionality, and value thus, bringing; “Power to the User!”
There was an interesting article recently in Physorg [dot] com titled; “Study exposes habit formation in smartphone users,” published on July 25, 2011. The piece brings up a very good point indeed;
“Popular media has raised the issue of repetitive & obsessive use of smartphones. Data collected in Finland & US presents scientific evidence for what the authors dubbed “checking habits”: repetitive checks of the menu screen, news, email, contacts, & social applications on the device. A typical checking lasts less than 30 seconds & involves opening the screen lock and accessing a single application.”
Okay so, I am quite confident that this does not surprise anyone, especially any of the readers who enjoy my personal tech articles. After all, we are a savvy crowd, and we understand how these things work. Nevertheless, let’s back up for a second and consider the benefits for newspapers and news outlets which are going digital, and providing apps, and paid content. For instance, consider the Wall Street Journal, and if you subscribe to their online service that you get news alerts of all the major stories during the day.
Your smart phone would know about how many stories on average you read per day, and the amount of time that you spend on each article. Your smart phone would also give that data to the Wall Street Journal, which could use that data to improve their services to you, and find people who perhaps spend the same amount of time on each article and read the same types of articles. Based on the ads that you click on, and people who have the same habits as you happen to click on can simply deliver up better ads, causing more people to click on them.
In doing so, they will make more advertising revenue, and therefore they will be able to hire more reporters, improve their news, and even lower the rates for their digital content. In this case everyone is a winner when artificial intelligence inside of our smart phones does its job. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
